Assi El Hellani, Lebanese Artist (singer and composer) was born on November 28, 1970, in Baalback. He is best-known for his impressive “howara” and “dabke”. If you may know, he was named Assi after Assi El Rahbani passed away in 1986.

Early Life and Education

Assi El Hellani started his musical education at age 16 in Beirut. He focused on Oud and Arab techniques which made them so popular nowadays.

One interesting fact is that he has been known for singing frequently in his home city. He mentioned that several times during interviews. Back then, at local, small gatherings, Assi usually had a major role. He sang alongside family and friends, which were the first public appearances of this singer. The year when he started the career was 1988 at Studio El Fann, a popular TV show from that time.

Career

We know that Assi’s career began in 1988, but an interesting fact is that he released his first album in 1989, under “Baytik Qasr” name. After that, he released 23 albums more and 50 videos, all related to music. Without any doubt, Assi is one of the most productive musicians from Lebanon.

One of his most popular songs is “Wani Marik Marret”. Fans still believe that this is the best song of him and commonly treated as the world’s main hit. Other best-known songs of Assi are Mali Saber Ya Nas, Bel Arabi, Bhebbik W Bghar, Wani Marik Marret, Sawt El Hida, Jan Jnouni, Saalouni and etc. Obviously, this fact cannot be generalized and it is an individual matter.

During his career, Assi has been cooperating with countless artists, singers, and other celebrities, all in order to produce the most appealing songs ever. During his career we were able to see him frequently cooperating with MBC Studios Beirut as well.

Assi is also known as a composer. He started back in 1991 when he published “Ya Hala Bel Khayl”. After that, he continued with an “Al Karar” poem, written by famous writer Nizar Kabbani. There are many more creations of this famous singer, including Bab Aam Yebki, Beirut Aam Tebki, Ya Nakir el Maarouf, Lebnani, Yemkin and Mawood.

As we have mentioned, his performances were seen across the world. There are just a few places where he didn’t have a concert. Popular and most visited locations were: Al Bassel and Al Mahabba Wal Salam Syria, Souq Waqef Doha Qatar, Layali Dubai UAE, Mawazine Morocco, Opera House Alexandria, Sawt Wal Daw Pyramids in Egypt, Albert Hall in London, Carthage Festival in Tunisia, Timgad Festival in Algeria, Opera House in Marbella, Opera house in Cairo Egypt, Jarash Culture and Arts Festivals in Jordan, MGM Las Vegas US, Souk Waqif Festival Doha Qatar, Palais des Congres Paris, Fox theatre Detroit Michigan in the US and etc. Furthermore, he is known for countless visits and concerts performed in Europe, Australia, and America.

Besides songs and concerts, Assi is known for roles in theater plays. Some of the most popular performers were: “Opera El Dayaa”, Maher Al Sabbah in baalback international festival, “Zayed Wal Helm” Royal opera house in London, “Men Ayam Salah El-Dine” and “Men Ayam Salah El-Dine” written by Farid.

Assi was one of the coaches of the Voice program. It was directed by MBC Studios Beirut. Assi’s Team won the first season. The show was more than just appealing and fans all over the world appreciate it and like his performance. During and after the program, Assi was the main topic in many online groups,forums and social media.

Humanitarian Engagement

Assi is one of the best-known singers when it comes to humanitarian work. He fights poverty and hunger and he constantly performs fund-raising concerts and ceremonies. Assi is nominated for goodwill ambassador at the UNDP (LiveLebanon program).

Assi isn’t only one of the most awarded artists from Lebanon, but one of the most awarded artists in the world. Obviously, there are numerous international and national awards. One of the most important is Honorary Ph.D. which he got from the University of Michigan.

Another important title was obtained by Georges Ibrahim El Khoury, where Assi was announced as “Fares el Ghina’ el Arabi” or The knight of Arabic music. Assi was thrilled with this title and he treats it as one of the most beloved.

Additional awards Assi got through his career are:

  • Murex d’Or awarded him several times with different titles.
  • Won bronze medal thanks to the best song category from Lebanon, by the “Studio El Fann”.
  • “Mali Sabr” by the Cairo International Festival for Radio and TV for the best Arabic song.
  • At Dubai Music Festival he was awarded for the best live Arabic sound.
